International Applicants

Special Considerations for International Applicants (any student who is not a permanent resident of the U.S.):

  • Applicants for whom English is a second language are required to demonstrate an acceptable level of spoken English usually by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score.

    • This requirement applies to all international applicants unless they have earned a degree in the U.S. within the past three years. For admission to the MSETM program, a minimum TOEFL score of 89 (internet-based test) is required.

Alternatively, applicants may submit one of the following scores to meet the English proficiency requirement:

      • IELTS (academic stream): minimum overall band score of 7.5
      • PTE: minimum score of 65
      • DET: minimum score of 120

Please note that all test scores must be from exams taken within the last two years. The TOEFL institution code for OSU is 6546.

For more information visit www.toefl.org, www.ielts.org, PTE English Language Tests | Pearson PTE, or Duolingo English Test. A waiver of this requirement can be obtained for applicants who have completed a baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, at which English is the primary language of instruction, located in a country in which English is a recognized primary language; applicants with one or more completed degrees from the countries listed here automatically receive this waiver.
  • Students admitted to the U.S. with an F-1 Visa may apply for the on-campus program.

  • Prospective students with Visas classified as H-1, L-1 or L-2 may be suited for professional track (online program) since the admission standard is to be professionally employed in a relevant position, provided they meet all other requirements. Confirmation of financial resources is not required for prospective students who are not planning to reside in the U.S. (distance learners) or from those holding a work visa (H-1, L-1, L-2, etc.)

  • Additional documentation related to your status may be requested by the graduate college.
