Dr. de Azevedo elected to national aviation weather steering committee

Dr. Gustavo B.H. de Azevedo, research assistant professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering/Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education and adjunct professor for the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected to serve on the steering committee of the Friends and Partners in Aviation Weather. 

 

Founded in 1997, FPAW is an international community of practice that brings together stakeholders across aviation operations, research, regulation and industry. The group’s mission is to advance the integration of weather into aviation decision-making, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the safest, most efficient and reliable operations possible. 

 

De Azevedo will represent the Regulations and Standards group on the steering committee. His election recognizes both his leadership in aviation weather and his active role in shaping national standards for emerging aerospace systems. In addition to his work with FPAW, de Azevedo serves as a subject matter expert in the FAA UAS Weather SWAT and leads the Means of Compliance task group for ASTM International’s Weather Information Performance standards for uncrewed and advanced air mobility aircraft. 

 

“This appointment allows me to bring OSU into national and international conversations that will directly impact the safe introduction of the next generation of autonomous aircraft into the National Airspace System,” de Azevedo said. 

 

De Azevedo earned his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Oklahoma and his B.Sc. in computer engineering from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His research focuses on weather-sensing uncrewed aircraft systems, autonomous and control systems, and engineering education. He has previously received recognition from the American Meteorological Society for his leadership in establishing new aviation weather standards.
