Stockel named 2024 Outstanding Safety Educator

Dr. Leslie Rex Stockel was recently named the 2024 Outstanding Safety Educator by the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).
Stockel is an associate professor of professional practice for the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology (FPSET) program in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) at Oklahoma State University. She also serves as the faculty advisor for the OSU’s student section of ASSP’s Oklahoma City Chapter and the advisor for the Fire Protection Society.
Each year, ASSP honors a member who demonstrates outstanding achievement in occupational safety and health education. These top instructors help students reach their full potential and become results-producing safety professionals. ASSP’s Outstanding Safety Educator Award is named after William E. Tarrants, a pioneer in safety education who was an ASSP Fellow and president (1977-78).
Stockel is a Certified Safety Professional with over 30 years of experience in the Safety and Health Profession. Leslie has worked in the manufacturing, petro-chemical and insurance industries as well as aviation, utilities, and public service before joining the OSU faculty in 2016.
From 2018-2023, she served on the Board of Directors for the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and was a founding trustee and director of the BCSP Foundation. In 2022, She served as President of the Board of Directors.
She is a professional member of the American Society of Safety (Engineers) Professionals where she has held numerous leadership positions both locally and regionally. She a past-president and current member of the ASSP Oklahoma City Chapter where she currently serves as OSU-student section faculty advisor. In 2016 she was named Safety Professional of the Year for the ASSE Oklahoma City Chapter. In 2018, she was named ASSE Region III Safety Professional of the Year for Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
