Proposed Center for Energy-Related Geologic Storage (ERGS)

ERGS

The Earth's subsurface offers solutions that both produce greenhouse gases and can help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Geologic storage is the critical key component for both.
This proposed Industry University Cooperative Research Center will address subsurface storage volume and storage security for fluids related to energy production and greenhouse gas mitigation by pursuing research in two primary areas: 1) storage capacity and 2) storage security.

Core Research Areas

ERGS will leverage wellbore leakage data to strengthen knowledge of subsurface storage integrity.
Particularly in basins where extensive well histories already exist, addressing permanent plugging and abandonment of wellbores and restoring geological barriers. Integrating fundamental science and engineering, and testing of materials under subsurface pressures, temperatures and earth stresses will enable a better understanding of geochemical and geomechanical changes involved in fluid-rock interactions that can affect integrity.
