OSU hosting 2025 Speedfest
Thursday, April 24, 2025
Speedfest XIV, the annual student high-speed aircraft design competition that began in 2011, returns as Oklahoma State University students are challenged to quickly design, develop and test a high-speed aircraft to compete in pylon races. This annual showcase puts the innovation and talent of OSU students to the test.
WHAT: Speedfest is a full day of OSU and high school students showing their engineering expertise and piloting skills in a competition format.
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2025
WHERE: OSU Unmanned Aircraft Flight Station, 4015 N3460 Rd., Glencoe, OK, 74032
DETAILS:
- The collegiate level, also known as ALPHA Class, will see students demonstrate their prototype aircraft’s flying ability and will explain their designs to judges and spectators. Aircraft must use only electric propulsion for this competition.
- A high school division, INDIA Class, is open to fifth through 12th-grade teams on an invitational basis. This is intended to inspire younger students through engineering and fun. Teams will complete as many laps as possible within a two-minute time frame using an electric-powered airplane.
- Competitors have reached a certain level of certification and skill to be able to participate. This ensures high-quality flying demonstrations the whole day.
- This event is free and open to the public, although parking is limited. Food and drinks will be sold during the event. Spectators are reminded to remain alert as planes fly throughout the event, which drew approximately 2,000 spectators in 2024.
- Speedfest started in 2011 with two OSU aerospace engineering capstone teams competing in a pylon race and some flight demonstrations by regional model airplane pilots and a few hundred in attendance.
