Mazharul Islam

Mazharul is a fourth year PhD student of the Center for Integrated Building Systems (CIBS) set to graduate in the Fall of 2023. He is a self-proclaimed foodie, who loves cooking, traveling, and enjoying movies and playing video games while relaxing at home. He is currently developing some new compressor technologies, including a peristaltic compressor, which has a working prototype that Mazharul is helping to develop.

 

Mazharul’s work started taking a look at how to improve compressor efficiency in vapor compression systems. A valve-less peristaltic compressor with variable volume ratios will increase efficiency and add flexibility to vapor compression refrigeration systems (Islam and Bradshaw (2021)). He experimented with a reconfigurable peristaltic compressor design and explored how chamber structure and actuation pattern affect efficiency (M Islam et al 2021), then went on to mathematically present a modified chamber model of a prototype compressor validated through experimental data with air as the working fluid.  (Islam et. al (2022)). Mazharul joined his Ph. D program in the spring of 2019, so he had the opportunity to see some change since the addition of the Center (CIBS officially starting in the fall of 2020). Able to see the growth with CIBS, he explained that it presents a great advantage to its students. He talked about collaboration with members of the industry, and of the connections and resources available that are unique CIBS while working on his project. He stressed the potential of what can be gained by joining the center, as opposed to the disconnect one might have without it.

 

When asked how he hopes his work would benefit the industry, he gave an example of a spool compressor. The first model and patent came about in the early 1900s, hitting the market for commercial use around 1980. Mazharul hopes his work will benefit the industry (or other research facilities) in much the same way, with a theme of efficiency, applied at a much faster rate, given modern technological advances and facilities available in the modern age. He hopes to integrate his work into other fields of studies to create new and innovative technology in more than the HVAC industry.

 

Mazharul is exploring options for after he graduates, stating that he would like to apply his skills and expertise in the industry in the design development sector.
