CIBS

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE’s) President Ginger Scoggins visited the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) on Tuesday, April 2nd. 2024.  While here, she visited some of the labs in CEAT, where she met with students and learned about their Center for Integrated Building Systems (CIBS) projects.

Kyle Shepherd, Ata Alkhatib, Amjid Khan, Amr Ashraf, Graham Tyra, Matin Ghadiri Yazdi, Shahzad Yousaf, Jacob Taylor, and Pouria Moghimi all spoke about CIBS and ASHRAE funded projects covering topics from predicting performance of low GWP refrigerants in various building systems, to a novel three-fluid fin-and-tube heat exchanger (TriCoil™), and a project that aims to find out if this technology can be efficiently combined with regular air conditioning or heat pump systems to store thermal energy at a lower cost.

Scoggins then spoke to nearly 100 students within the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She presented on her presidential theme for the 2023-24 ASHRAE Society Year: "Challenge Accepted: Tackling the Climate Crisis."

In a world facing a climate emergency, she emphasized the urgent need for action within the building industry to address greenhouse gas emissions. She advocates for uncomfortable decisions to be made in order to equip ASHRAE members with the knowledge and tools necessary to design and renovate buildings that would mitigate their impact on the climate crisis. This theme coincides with her commitment to sustainability, resilience, and meaningful leadership within the built environment, and she is a dedicated advocate for addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Scoggins, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, is ASHRAE’s President for the 2023-24 term.  Scoggins previously served on the ASHRAE Board of Directors a president-elect, treasurer, vice president and director and regional chair.

ASHRAE was formed as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers by the merger in 1959 of American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) founded in 1894 and The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) founded in 1904.
