Another success for OSU Construction Engineering Technology students
Tuesday, March 5, 2024
Construction Engineering Technology students at Oklahoma State University competed in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 5 competition in Dallas on February 17-19, 2024 and brought home another trophy.
The Region 5 ASC Student Competition, which is sponsored by TEXO has four categories
of competitions: Commercial, Design/Build, Heavy Civil, and Concrete Solutions, representing
the various sectors of the construction industry. Region 5 includes universities in
Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana that offer four-year and two-year construction
management, science and technology degrees. The universities bring 6-person student
teams to Dallas, Texas to compete against each other providing solutions to a real
world construction project. Students are given 16 hours to perform various construction
industry tasks, including but not limited to, scheduling, estimating, site utilization,
safety, coordination of the work, contract negotiation, pre-construction services,
quality control, personnel issues, model building, unforeseen site conditions, etc. The
team responds to a request for a written proposal and then follows it up with a presentation
to the construction company sponsor who build the actual project.
OSU competed in the Commerical, Design Build and Concrete Solutions competitions.
The Concrete Solutions team walked away with a first place trophy.
The Concrete Solutions Team (Bobby Russell, Madison Master, Camden Fleming, Ethan Via, Tyler Hammons, Brett Trimble and the team coach Dr. Dan Cook) took first place. Bobby Russell received the Best Speaker award for Concrete Solutions and Gage Allen received the Best Speaker award for Commercial Building.
The ASC is the professional association for the development and advancement of construction education, where the sharing of ideas and knowledge inspires, guides and promotes excellence in curricula, teaching, research and service.
“I’m really proud of all the students who competed,” said Dr. Heather Yates, professor of construction engineering technology. “The ASC student competitions are something that the OSU Construction Engineering Technology Program has competed in for almost 30 years, and we have a rich history of success. Bringing home the first place trophy in Concrete Solutions is a big accomplishment as this is the first year that this category has been offered in Region 5, so it was new to all of the team members.”
