Project Title: Empowering Cloud Computing for Non-image-based Diabetic Retinopathy Screening by Designing an EHR-oriented Incremental Learning Framework
PI: Tieming Liu. Co-I: Chenang Liu. Senior Personnel: Zheng Han and William Paiva.
Amount of funding: $217,323
Project Duration: 9/1/2023 - 8/31/2024
Abstract: As the migration of Electronic Health Record (EHR) data to the cloud becomes increasingly prevalent, it presents both opportunities for enhancing predictive models and significant computational burden on the cloud associated with retraining deep-learning models using vast datasets. In this project, we aim to design an innovative framework called Sample Recycling-Assisted Incremental Learning (SR-IL). This framework will facilitate the updating of deep neural network models with newly added data in the cloud without necessitating a complete retraining process. We will implement the proposed SR-IL framework with the Cerner Real-World Data on Amazon Web Services to continuously enhance data quality and the accuracy of the deep-learning models for non-image-based diabetic retinopathy screening with routine lab results and comorbidity information.
