Tony McAleavy, Ph.D.
Overview
Dr. Tony McAleavy is an assistant professor and program coordinator for the Fire and Emergency Management Program. He holds a PhD in Disaster Management from the University of South Wales in the United Kingdom. Dr. McAleavy has previously held substantive academic positions in the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom as well as the United States and visiting professorships in India and Turkey.
Dr. McAleavy is a permanent member of the National Academies Action Collaborative on Disaster Research. He serves as a technical specialist for the United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response program (UN-Spider). He is a National Science Foundation CONVERGE Data Ambassador, and an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Emergency Services. Dr. McAleavy is also a former practitioner with over a decade of experience with H.M. Coastguard, the Northeast Ambulance Service, and local government emergency management in the United Kingdom.
Research
Dr. McAleavy’s research addresses problems in disaster preparedness and response. He has received funding from the National Academies, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the National Science Foundation. He has also been published in several high-profile journals. For example, Frontiers in Sociology, the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and PNAS Nexus.
