Camille DeYong, PhD

camille deyong

Dr. Camille Frye DeYong is an Associate Professor (Emerita) of Industrial Engineering and Management at Oklahoma State University. She was the first female faculty member hired and tenured in IEM. She holds a BS in Mathematics Education and master’s and PhD in IEM, all from OSU. Her master’s advisor was D. Scott Sink, PhD and her dissertation advisor was Dr. Kenneth E. Case.

Over her 30-year career, Dr. DeYong served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator for research contracts totaling over $1,000,000 for organizations including the Defense Logistics Agency, the U.S. Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity, the National Science Foundation and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

Dr. DeYong authored twelve technical papers and one book chapter. Her research interests were in the areas of technology forecasting, group processes, and service quality. She was an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer and served as an examiner and team leader for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award as well as examiner, team leader, trainer and judge for the Oklahoma Quality Award Foundation.

Dr. DeYong was asked to serve in many ways while at OSU, including as the Interim Director of Student Services in CEAT and Interim Head, IEM. However, one of her proudest roles was serving as Co-Chair of the Retirement Subcommittee of the Flexible Benefits Committee from 2004-2007. At the time, salaries upon which pensions from Oklahoma Teachers’ Retirement System were capped at $40,000 for employees of OSU and OU. No other common schools or regionals had this restriction. The committee significantly contributed to changing laws at the State level which uncapped the salaries. This means OSU and OU employees who are members of OTRS now receive pensions based on their highest earned salaries..

From the time she was a high school math teacher in Oklahoma public schools, teaching has been Dr. DeYong’s passion. During her time at OSU, she received multiple awards for teaching and advising at both the College and University levels. These include the Regents’ Distinguished Teaching Award (twice), the Halliburton Award of Excellence (three times), the Advancia Corporation Faculty Award for Excellence in Distance Education and was named an outstanding instructor (top 10%) by the National Technological University two years in a row. Dr. DeYong received the Outstanding Advisor for Region V of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (now IISE), a University Award for Excellence in Advising, the Honored Faculty/Staff award from OSU Greek Life, and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the CEAT Multicultural Engineering Program. Dr. DeYong was the undergraduate advisor (later renamed Undergraduate Program Director) while an assistant professor seeking tenure and was advised multiple times to ‘focus on the things that count.’ Oh well.

Dr. DeYong would like to thank Drs. Ken Case and David Pratt for their unwavering support and cherishes the memory of Dr. Jim Shamblin.
