Leland Blank, Ph.D.


Lee Blank served as the Dean of Engineering (2001-06 and 2013-16) at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, where he holds the title of Dean Emeritus. Additionally, he served as the Interim Provost and Chief Academic Officer at AUS until 2017. Dr. Blank is Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University, where as Assistant Dean of Engineering, he founded and directed the engineering honors program and multiple continuous improvement teams at the Provost level during the 1990s. Blank started his teaching career at the University of Texas-El Paso after earning his PhD and MS in Industrial Engineering at Oklahoma State University. Further, he has worked in international higher education in Australia, China, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Qatar and South Africa.

His industrial experience includes Southwestern Bell Telephone, Verizon, and San Antonio Public Service. He served as a congressional appointee to the US Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, and is a licensed PE in Texas.

Blank is Past President and Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), and a Past President of Alpha Pi Mu. Besides technical journal and research articles, he has co-authored 12 engineering textbooks and ebooks on the subjects of engineering economy and statistics. His latest texts are Engineering Economy, 8th edition (2018), and Basics of Engineering Economy, 3rd edition (2021), both published by McGraw Hill.

He currently serves on The Cowboy Academy of the IEM Department at OSU and the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, his undergraduate alma mater. IISE’s Wellington Award (for service to the engineering economy profession) and the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Award have been awarded to him. Additionally, he is the 2021 recipient of the Lohmann Medal Award and a Hall of Fame member of the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology at OSU.
