Phil Farrington, Ph.D.


Phil Farrington earned his BS and MS degrees from the University of Missouri in 1983 and 1984. He then earned his PhD degree from OSU in 1991. He joined the Industrial & Systems Engineering and Engineering Management faculty at The University of Alabama in Huntsville upon graduation from OSU. He progressed steadily through the academic ranks of Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor. Dr. Farrington served as the
Interim Dean of the College of Engineering in Huntsville for two years and as the Director of Distance Education for the College for six years. In total, he served the Department and College for 26 years until his retirement in 2017. Prior to his academic
career, Dr. Farrington held several manufacturing engineering positions at A.B. Chance Company.

 

Dr. Farrington’s teaching and research interests include Quality Control and Statistical Analysis, Systems Analysis, Emerging Theories of Industrial & Systems Engineering, Integrated Product and Process Design, Engineering Economic Analysis, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing. He was committee chair for 17 PhD students and 9 MS students. Dr Farrington is a Fellow of the American Society of Engineering Management, a Senior Member of the American Society of Quality and a Senior Member of The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. He is member of honorary societies Alpha Pi Mu (IE), Epsilon Mu Eta (Engineering Management), Phi Kappa Phi
(University), and Tau Beta Pi (Engineering).

 

Dr. Farrington’s research contributions include work on over 50 research contracts as an Investigator or Principal Investigator. Cumulative funding for these contracts exceeded $7.5 million. Clients included the National Science Foundation, NASA, the U.S. Army Missile Command, Chrysler Huntsville Electronics Division, and Boeing. Dr. Farrington’s publication list includes 29 refereed publications in journals such as Integrated Manufacturing Systems, The International Journal of Computer Simulation, The Journal of Technology Transfer, Engineering Management Journal, IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology, Computers and Industrial Engineering, Quality and Reliability Engineering International, Journal of Computer Science, and Journal of Engineering Education. His list of conference papers includes 65 papers with an additional list of 25 conference presentations without papers.

 

In retirement, Dr. Farrington continues to consult with clients in and around Huntsville Alabama.
