In his day job, Ying Tat is a Principal Data Scientist in the Watson Customer Engagement
division of IBM, located in Foster City, California, since early 2014. This division
focuses on software solutions in marketing, commerce and supply chain. Ying Tat plays
the role of a solution architect, primarily for marketing solutions, leading the design
of data-driven, analytics-oriented functionalities and the development of computing
algorithms to support the design. Prior to that, he was a Principal Research Staff
Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose. He worked in modeling and
analysis of production and service systems for the purposes of business strategy formulation,
performance management and resource optimization. With colleagues in IBM Global Business
Services, he also served as a technical consultant to IBM clients. Before moving to
Almaden in 2004, he worked in supply chain management research, including product
pricing, demand planning, inventory replenishment and production planning, at the
IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center and Philips Laboratories in New York, for 15
years.
In 2012, with coauthors Axel Hochstein and Matt Denesuk, he won the Best Paper award
at the IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics.
In 2008, with co-authors Jesse Bockstedt and Wolfgang Koenig he won the Best Practitioner
Presentation Award at the Frontiers in Service Conference. He is currently on the
editorial board of Service Science and the International Journal of Service Operations and Informatics. Ying Tat holds a B.Sc. degree from University of Hong Kong and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees
from University of Wisconsin – Madison, all in Industrial Engineering.
