Architecture & Arch. Engineering
Graduate Certificate
A Graduate Certificate meets the needs of early and mid-career professionals who desire additional training/education in a specialty area.
It can also be considered preparatory studies for new graduates preparing to apply to graduate school elsewhere. The proposed certificate culminates in an independent study course, to be supervised by an Architecture faculty member, where the student will apply the concepts learned in coursework to the process of solving a unique design challenge fundamental to the spirit of the area under study. The Graduate Certificate is 12 credit hours, and is administered by the OSU Graduate College, however students would be academically advised in the School of Architecture.
An Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Integrative Design
Clients of today demand an emphasis on building envelope performance, supported by research methodologies and hard data. Students preparing to enter the profession, either as Architect, Construction Manager, Civil Engineer, or Engineering Technologist, as well as those who have a significant professional practice background, can benefit from directed study of new tools and technologies and their integration into design thinking strategies. An important feature of the certificate is its interdisciplinary nature – students would be required to take three to six hours of this directed study outside their major area.
The certificate in Integrative Design emanates from the expertise of School of Architecture professor Dr. Khaled Mansy, whose 2015 text, Integrative Design: Building Systems for Architects and Architectural Engineers, establishes the way for a performance-based approach to the design of high-performing building enclosures. While the certificate begins with Dr. Mansy’s expertise, the program is open to appeal to diverse approaches to building performance, whether it be financial, energy, daylighting or mechanical performance that should be of interest students across the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. This Certificate is being offered in a traditional instruction format, and consists of 12 credit hours in a combination of ARCH, CMT, and MAE, MET, and CIVE – five departments of CEAT working together in this interdisciplinary program.
